The Strategy Leg of the Pyramid

Let’s dive in a little more about the board’s role in setting strategy. Effective boards consistently challenge themselves to move from the operational to the strategic. Moving toward the strategic can be uncomfortable, ambiguous, difficult and risky. It is also highly effective.

Enabling boards to participate early in strategy formation and stress-testing ideas along the way builds alignment. Alignment is the fuel that accelerates progress in any organization. Strategy is also mighty engaging work. It’s collaborative and leverages board members’ expertise and insights in a way that operational work does not. At the end of the day, strategy is core board work because it’s the place where we get to consider options for a better, brighter future.

Strategy is a core function for effective boards. Ignore it, and watch burnout soar.
